Happy New Year everyone! I have very few traditions on the blog but this is one I enjoy, always a fun way to kick off the new year. Alas here I am with preparing for my only end of the year tradition and I discover I didn’t even do one of these for last year, 2017! *sigh*
Never mind though and we’ll press on in the spirit of renewal. 2018 was a bit of an odd one: an unreasonably large number of the games I played in the first half of the year were disappointing. A lack of inspiring games is partly why I blogged very little – my socks just weren’t being consistently rocked by the stuff I was playing.
Then in the second half of the year things changed when I finally picked up a Switch. At the same time, reluctantly, I packed away my old CRT TV. Some weeks later I decided to re-dedicate myself to blogging, and since then I’ve been more thorough than ever before in terms of my output, writing about most of the games I played these past few months.
Given my journey this year and how consistent I’ve been with blogging lately, all of the games featured here I played in the first half of 2018, prior to my Switch purchase. Enough pre-amble, bring on the highlights! Continue reading
I have a new year’s resolution: write more posts for the blog. And to achieve that I’m going to write shorter posts. I really outdid myself with my last post, and I think it partly explains why I’ve not been around. So with that said, let’s keep it brief(er than usual) here! Despite being busy these past weeks, I have somehow managed to play a crapton of games this Christmas/New Year break, including paying my old friend, Lords of Thunder, a long overdue visit. I’ve loved Lords of Thunder ever since it came out on the Wii’s Virtual Console service in 2008. After my Wii stopped working normally several years ago, I’d not been back to it. After some experimentation I was able to successfully initiate a Wii U transfer, which rescued my VC games and (to my surprise) all the save data too. That wasn’t the only surprise though – I was completely unprepared for the frankly incredible loading screen that accompanies a Wii to Wii U move.
Anyway, one of the first games I redownloaded on the Wii U was Lords of Thunder. As the title of this post states, I love it, and you’re about to read just some of the things I love about it. Continue reading
Colour me surprised, I’m enjoying Skyward Sword immensely. OK, rewind. Skyward Sword feels like two games in one – and it is! Half of the game is lifted straight out of Wii Sports Resort. The other half is an original Zelda title. The combination sounds like it should be clunky, but it’s not – and a lot of that, I have to say, is testament to just how robust the mechanics of Wii Sports Resort were in the first place. So on the control and item control side of things Skyward Sword is sorted – catching bugs in a net has never been so much fun. How about the Zelda side?
Well it’s as if the folks over at Nintendo read my mind back in 2006 when I was playing Twilight Princess and not having a whole lot of fun! Pretty much all of my complaints about that game (and some of those apply to Wind Waker before it too) have been dealt with in Skyward Sword. As the post title says, it’s awesome. Maybe in part it has to do with low expectations? After being disappointed by Twilight Princess I wasn’t getting my hopes up for a new Zelda game again any time soon, and then the reception of Skyward Sword “on the ground” so to speak (i.e. on message boards as opposed to professional reviews) seemed pretty lukewarm with complaints about the limited overworld, the small number of areas to explore and copious padding. That explains in part why I’m only playing Skyward Sword now, five years after its initial release. Continue reading
Back again, and it’s the same deal as last time. After the last post, I felt even more strongly the importance of putting out these posts given some of the gems I experienced this year. As we’re opening the new year with a new console, the PS3, it’s natural to look back and reminisce. And why not focus on the legacy of one of my most well-used consoles, the Wii. Released in 2006, the Wii was instantly a huge commercial success. Partly because of its mainstream appeal, it became controversial for the 0.00005% of people who identify as “hardcore gamers” and considered Nintendo traitors, or some such BS. However, perhaps surprisingly, I have come full circle on my opinion of the Wii’s library. Continue reading
There are touches of greatness to Rabbids Go Home. Amongst them is the game’s memorable use of licensed music, a rarity in this kind of game. The Delfonics, in a 3D platformer? You bet.
(OK, not this song. Actually it’s I Told You So.) Delfonics and a few other fantastic touches aside, Rabbids Go Home is let down by the repetitive nature of its main gameplay. The game basically consists of controlling a shopping trolley, racing through levels with your two Rabbids, stealing junk from humans in an almost Katamari like fashion. The goal is to pick up enough junk to help the Rabbids build their way to the moon. It’s a fun, wacky premise, and the game delivers on that absurdity. Ultimately what you end up with is a perfectly decent alternative to the Mario Galaxy games, in an era when there are very few alternatives to Super Mario Galaxy. But I don’t really want to talk overly much about the game itself here: this post is about post-game content, i.e. what happens when you beat the main game of Rabbids Go Home. Continue reading
