The Wii and Me

As we’re opening the new year with a new console, the PS3, it’s natural to look back and reminisce. And why not focus on the legacy of one of my most well-used consoles, the Wii. Released in 2006, the Wii was instantly a huge commercial success. Partly because of its mainstream appeal, it became controversial for the 0.00005% of people who identify as “hardcore gamers” and considered Nintendo traitors, or some such BS. However, perhaps surprisingly, I have come full circle on my opinion of the Wii’s library. Rabbids Go Home (Wii) and false carrots

There are touches of greatness to Rabbids Go Home. Amongst them is the game’s memorable use of licensed music, a rarity in this kind of game. The Delfonics, in a 3D platformer? You bet.

(OK, not this song. Actually it’s I Told You So.) Delfonics and a few other fantastic touches aside, Rabbids Go Home is let down by the repetitive nature of its main gameplay. The game basically consists of controlling a shopping trolley, racing through levels with your two Rabbids, stealing junk from humans in an almost Katamari like fashion. The goal is to pick up enough junk to help the Rabbids build their way to the moon. It’s a fun, wacky premise, and the game delivers on that absurdity. Ultimately what you end up with is a perfectly decent alternative to the Mario Galaxy games, in an era when there are very few alternatives to Super Mario Galaxy. But I don’t really want to talk overly much about the game itself here: this post is about post-game content, i.e. what happens when you beat the main game of Rabbids Go Home. Continue reading

Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii): a love story to remember?

If you’ve been reading this blog or listening to our podcasts, you will know what a stickler I am for endings and having a good, engaging story to keep you warm on those long RPG nights. However, I am a fair woman and, as much as I believe that story is important, it’s not everything. I believe that Xenoblade Chronicles is a game changer as far as the RPG genre goes, and worthy of all the critical success it has achieved. It is beautiful, majestic, pioneering, and all those good words. I am a believer. I am a huge fan. Therefore, rest assured, what lies ahead are the complaints of an ardent fangirl.

This contains storyline spoilers for late in the game, so read at own risk. And if you haven’t played Xenoblade Chronicles to completion already… what are you waiting for?! One of the best RPGs, even games, of all time awaits.

Fishy happenings in Rune Factory: Frontier (Wii)

The Rune Factory series, a spinoff of the Harvest Moon franchise, eerily responds to all my criticisms of a recent Harvest Moon game. Frontier boasts an impressive cast of likable characters, enjoyable gameplay, solid storytelling, and variety, an element distinctly lacking in some of the Harvest Moon games. Not only do you get to befriend townspeople, cook and take care of your fields, you also fight in dungeons, befriend monsters, and forge your own weapons, tools and equipment. There’s so much to do in fact that is the first part of a double post. The second post will explore the weird gender dynamics in the game, of which there’s much to discuss, but for now I’m going to summarise the game and set out my space-time continuum theories about Frontier. Moving houses with Eledees (Wii)

I haven’t written for our blog in a while – because I’m moving house! As I sit here, surrounded by boxes, suitcases, bags and random objects, I feel inspired to write about the ultimate moving-house-wish-fulfillment game (I wish I had a capture gun right now). Eledees, also known as Elebits in the US, was one of the first games to be released on the Wii, but you wouldn’t know it because it’s one of those many underrated Wii gems. Continue reading
