This post was inspired by a couple of recent things: A Most Agreeable Pastime’s post on the impact of the decline of the Japanese gaming industry discusses the heightened prominence of Anglo-American narratives in games. On Nine to Five Gamer too was a post on race in videogames which discusses the lack of non-stereotypical representations of black people in videogames. I’ve noticed though that the question of representation often gets bogged down in the issue of character attributes, so in this post I don’t want to focus on characters at all but instead common narratives, settings and themes which are pervasive in Western culture. These narratives are often Eurocentric in their repetition and emphasis of certain historical events to the exclusion of countless others. Continue reading
Hi folks, I just wanted to give a brief update as there’s been a lot going on around here. I have managed to get my grubby hands on a Sega Dreamcast for the first time, a mere 15 years after its release. I’ve spent a few days with it now, so what follows here are some first impressions of the console. The unprecedented success of the Call of Duty franchise and its ubiquitous abbreviation, “CoD”, has brought the language of the fish market into internet cafes and game shops, where before there was just the smell. I wonder if the developers of Call of Cutie were confused by the constant sound of Call of Duty’s fishy acronym (I know I am), and wanted to replace CoD with something gentler and more pleasing to the ear: CoC.
Call of Cutie is a first-person-cuter or FPC. This brand new sub-genre subverts the conventions of the FPS, doing to the genre what the Parodius series and games like Star Parodier and Harmful Park did to the shoot ’em up. Exhumed/Powerslave is an interesting game, developed by Lobotomy Software, the company that produced Saturn ports of Duke Nukem 3D and Quake. I’m playing the Playstation version of Exhumed, and as I’m only a few levels in, bear in mind that these impressions may not hold up and I might have more to say about it a later stage. For all I know the game could dive off a metaphorical cliff at this point, into a metaphorical sea of poo. Continue reading
