So as part of December’s deluge of games (see here), I got a number of import Sega Saturn releases. It’s a mishmash of stuff, and I’ve spent a fair amount of time with every game now with the exception of the Clockwork Knight games which perhaps I’ll tackle in another post. For now though here are some brief impressions of Baku Baku Animal, Deep Fear, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Lode Runner: The Legend Returns, and the concisely named Detana Twinbee Yahho-! Deluxe Pack. Now, I only have limited access to a Wii, but when I found this game going for £2 at a local shop I could hardly say no. The original NiGHTS Into Dreams, which I have a few brief posts about is one of my favourite games, dare I say, ever. I was of course aware that its 2007 sequel, Journey of Dreams, got a fairly muted reception upon its release, garnering fairly average reviews and I imagine less-than-fairly-high sales. But, thankfully, from the little I’ve played, Journey of Dreams does at least retain the exact same gameplay of the original, with the expected modern visual effects and clarity. I haven’t played enough yet to talk much about the game as a whole, but I felt compelled to post because the opening to this game is revealing of a number of issues from the word “go”.
Hi folks, I just wanted to give a brief update as there’s been a lot going on around here. I have managed to get my grubby hands on a Sega Dreamcast for the first time, a mere 15 years after its release. I’ve spent a few days with it now, so what follows here are some first impressions of the console. Panzer Dragoon II Zwei on the Saturn is a once-in-a-system’s-lifetime experience. My only beef is with the name: why, Sega? What’s wrong with you? I don’t mind the German, but don’t then chicken out and add an extra number! *sigh* Ah well – Sega have made many far worse decisions.
Who are you? A game? What are you really? Did Taito, your creator, realise the profound philosophical implications of creating you? Every name you adopt is a puzzle, a joke designed to make us question the nature of identity. How very fitting and profound given that one of your names refers to layers: perhaps if we uncover all of the layers we might find the real you, or perhaps not.
